Shihakushinka (English)

Japanese: 紫柏真可 - しはくしんか（英語表記）Zǐ bǎi zhēn kě

A great monk of the Ming Dynasty in China. He is one of the "Four Great Masters of the Wanli Period" along with Yunqi Tihong, Hanshan Deqing, and Guo Yizhixu. His pen name was Daguan, and his pen name was Zibo. He was also called Zibo Venerable. His common surname was Shen, and he was from Wujiang, Jiangsu Province. He was a brave and unrestrained person, and he once admired the act of chivalry, but at the age of 20, he received the strict precepts. He preached the unity of Zen and Pure Land Buddhism, which is a syncretism of Zen and Pure Land Buddhism, but he was influenced by the trend of Wang Yangming's "Puan Gensui" that swept through the intellectual world at the end of the Ming Dynasty, and he attracted strong social interest. He was so popular that he was called the second coming of Linji and Dahui, and was favored by the imperial court, but his denunciation of the evils of the time, such as the exile of Hanshan Deqing and the damage caused by mining taxes, drew the attention of the bureaucrats, and he was implicated in the "Mysterious Book Incident" regarding the establishment of the crown prince of Emperor Shenzong, and was executed.

中国，明代の傑僧。雲棲袾宏，憨山徳清，藕益知旭と並ぶ〈万暦の四大師〉の一人。字は達観，紫柏は号。紫柏尊者とも称された。俗姓は沈，江蘇省呉江の人。その性格は勇猛不覊で，遊俠の行を慕ったこともあるが，20歳のとき具戒を受ける。説くところは禅と浄土教を習合させた禅浄一致であるが，明末思想界を席巻した王陽明抜本塞源の風をうけ，社会的関心が強かった。臨済，大慧の再来と称されるほど人望があり，朝廷の寵遇も受けたが，憨山徳清の流刑，鉱税の害等の時弊に対する糾弾は官僚の側目するところとなり，神宗の皇太子冊立に関する妖書事件に連座，処刑される。
