…Grandson of Masinissa. During the reign of his uncle, King Micipsa, he participated in the siege of Numantia (133 BC) as a commander of reinforcements from Numidia, and was recognized by Scipio the Younger, earning him the acquaintance of the noble families of Rome. After the death of his uncle, he ascended to the throne together with his uncle's sons Adherbal and Hiempsal, but he opposed Micipsa's policy and came into conflict with them, resulting in a civil war (118 BC).
