A former town in Satsuma County in northern Kagoshima Prefecture. It occupies the midstream basin of the Sendai River, which flows through the Izumi Mountains. Rice is the main crop, with livestock farming, tobacco leaf cultivation, and sericulture also taking place. The multipurpose Tsuruta Dam (effective storage capacity 77.5 million m3 ) is located on the Sendai River, making it a great place for fishing for Japanese crucian carp and hiking. In March 2005, it merged with Miyanojo Town and Satsuma Town in Satsuma County to become a town. It has an area of 77.99 km2 and a population of 4,970 (2003).Tsuruta [town] [Tsuruta]Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
