Born July 19, 1905 in Kansas City, Missouri
[Died] February 15, 1972. Nyon, Switzerland. An American journalist with a strong knowledge of China. Studied at the University of Missouri and Columbia University. In 1928, he moved to Shanghai, and from 1929 to 1930, he was deputy editor of the China Weekly Review in Shanghai, and from 1934 to 1935, he was a lecturer at Yenching University in Beijing. From 1934 to 1937, he was a correspondent for the New York Sun. He was active in reporting from the Manchurian Incident to the outbreak of the Second Sino-Japanese War, and in 1936, he was the first foreigner to enter the Yan'an area, where he met Mao Zedong, and gained worldwide fame with Red Star Over China, the first to report on the true nature of the Chinese Communist Party. From 1943 to 1951, he was deputy editor of the Saturday Evening Post. During World War II, he visited India, China, the Soviet Union, and other countries as a war correspondent. After the war, he visited China in 1960, 1965, and 1970, and met with Mao Zedong, Zhou Enlai, and others, reporting on the true state of China. In December 1970, Mao Zedong conveyed to him his readiness to meet with U.S. President Nixon, which played a key role in bringing the two countries closer together. His other books include The Other Side of the River: Red China Today (1962).

[Died] July 1, 1980, London. British novelist and physicist. Educated at the University of Leicester and the University of Cambridge, he taught at Cambridge for many years. During World War II, he participated in the planning of the government's science administration, and began writing novels around that time. He published The Search (1934), followed by Strangers and Brothers (40), which became the first of an 11-volume series of novels of the same name (completed in 70). In 1950, he married the female writer Pamela H. Johnson. In 1959, he gave a lecture at Cambridge University entitled The Two Cultures and the Scientific Revolution, which pointed out the unfortunate division between spiritual culture and scientific civilization and criticized the indifference of some literary figures to science, causing a great stir and leading to a debate with FR Leavis and others.
