…There have been attempts to systematically understand the physiology and pathology of the lower respiratory tract and esophagus since ancient times, but the academic establishment of the modern tracheoesophageal field is largely due to the development of techniques for examining the airway and esophagus. In the early 19th century, other endoscopes, mainly those used for the bladder and rectum, were already being used to examine the esophagus, but Gustav Killian (1860-1921) eventually invented the bronchoscope, which allows observation by inserting a tube directly into the bronchi.
