Sea God Shrine - Watatsumi Shrine

Located in Kisaka, Minemachi, Tsushima City, Nagasaki Prefecture (central part of Tsushima Island). Toyotamahime-no-Mikoto, Ugayafukiaezu-no-Mikoto, Hikohohodemi-no-Mikoto, Munakata-no-Kami, and Michiomi-no-Muchi-no-Kami are enshrined here. It is said that the main shrine was founded during the reign of Emperor Nintoku, when the shrine repelled an attack by foreign ships. It is a famous shrine listed in the Engishiki, and was conferred the rank of Shogo-no-ge in 870 (Jogan 12). In the Middle Ages, it was called Hachiman-gu, and was the Ichinomiya of Tsushima Province. In 1871 (Meiji 4), it was ranked as a National Shrine of Medium Quality. The annual festival is held on August 5th of the lunar calendar, and includes the Shinkoshiki and Hamadono Hojo Festivals. The bronze Shaka Nyorai standing statue (Silla Buddha), which is the shrine's treasure, is designated as an Important Cultural Property of Japan.

長崎県対馬(つしま)市峰町(みねまち)木坂(きさか)（対馬島中部）に鎮座。豊玉姫尊(とよたまひめのみこと)、鵜葺草葺不合尊(うがやふきあえずのみこと)、彦火火出見(ひこほほでみ)尊、宗像(むなかた)神、道主貴(みちおみのむち)神を祀(まつ)る。仁徳(にんとく)天皇の治世、来襲した異国船を撃退したことにより、本社が創祀(そうし)されたと伝える。『延喜式(えんぎしき)』所載の名神(みょうじん)大社で、870年（貞観12）に正(しょう)五位下(げ)を奉叙された。中世には八幡宮(はちまんぐう)を称し、対馬国の一宮(いちのみや)であった。1871年（明治4）に国幣中社に列格。例祭は旧暦8月5日で、神幸(じんこう)式や浜殿放生(はまどのほうじょう)祭などがある。社宝の銅造釈迦如来(しゃかにょらい)立像（新羅(しらぎ)仏）は国の重要文化財に指定されている。
