A bird of the woodpecker family (illustration). It is a resident bird found from Honshu to Tanegashima. It is endemic to Japan, but not in large numbers. It is about 29 cm long. Its plumage is dark green above and gray-green below, with a V-shaped black stripe on the underside. It is characterized by a red and black jaw line that extends like a whisker from under the beak. Males have a red top, but females only have red on the back of their heads. It lives in lush broadleaf forests in mountainous areas, and drifts to plains from autumn to winter, so it can also be seen in urban areas. Its call is a high-pitched "kyok, kyok" or "kek, kek."

キツツキ目キツツキ科の鳥（イラスト）。留鳥として本州から種子島まで分布している。日本特産種だが，数は多くない。全長約29cm。羽色は上面が暗緑色，下面が灰緑色で，下腹部にV字形の黒い横斑がある。くちばしの下からひげ状にのびた赤と黒の顎線をもっているのが特徴。雄は頭頂部が赤いが，雌では後頭部だけ赤い。山地のよく茂った広葉樹林にすみ，秋から冬には平地に漂行するので，市街地でも見かけることがある。キョッ，キョッ，あるいはケッ，ケッとかん高い声で鳴く。
