Redgrave, Vanessa
Born January 30, 1937, London. British stage and film actress. Known for her longstanding political activism. She comes from a famous theatrical family. Her father, Michael S. Redgrave, is one of the most beloved actors in the UK. Her mother, Rachel Kempson, and sister, Lynne, are also actresses, and her brother, Colin, is a director and actor. Her two daughters, born to her and film director Tony Richardson, whom she married in the 1960s, are also actresses. She made her acting debut in the play "A Touch of the Sun" (1957), in which she co-starred with her father. Her first film career was in Morgan! (1966), for which she was nominated for an Academy Award. She was also nominated for an Academy Award for her role as dancer Isadora Duncan in Isadora (1968), and won an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for Julia (1977). She won an Emmy Award for her role as a Jewish woman who is sent to a Nazi concentration camp in the Arthur Miller-scripted TV movie Playing for Time (1980), but drew criticism for her long-standing advocacy for the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO). In the 1990s, the criticism subsided after she appeared in popular films such as Mission: Impossible (1996), but there is no doubt that her political activism influenced her acting career.
