...The Concerts royaux (1722), composed to entertain Louis XIV in his later years, and its sequel Les goûts réünis, or New Concerts (1724), reflect the musical tastes of France in the first half of the 18th century. Couperin's greatest achievement, however, is his more than 230 club-songs, collected in 27 suites (Ordre) in four volumes (1713, 17, 22, 30). A suite may contain as few as four to as many as 23 short pieces, and over the years the number of dances such as allemandes and courantes has decreased. Instead, the style is more diverse, including poetic and enigmatically titled pieces (e.g. Les baricades mistérieuses), works depicting natural scenery (Les ondes, Les rossignol‐en‐amour), and satirical cycles (Les fastes de la grande et anciénne‐Mxnxstrxndxsx), which is worthy of the name of the Clavussian poet and represents the pinnacle of the Clavussian school of French Baroque music. *Some of the terminology explanations that refer to "Ordol" are listed below.
