The Passion of Jeanne d'Arc

A French film made in 1928. Released in Japan in 1929 (Showa 4). Directed by Danish director Carl Theodor Dreyer. Starring French stage actress Falconetti. There are many artistic works that deal with the miracles of Joan of Arc and the Inquisition, but this film is limited to the so-called "Passion" scenes of the courtroom trial and execution, and the screen is a series of close-ups. Hungarian director Rudolf Maté's cinematography unifies the style with a variety of camera angles, rich composition, and excellent montage, making it powerful and overwhelming to the viewer. The plaster of the courtroom and execution grounds on the set was all painted pink and filmed, aiming for a subtle contrast with the human skin, making it full of innovative styles. There are almost no subtitles, but the depiction of facial expressions tells more than that, and it is evaluated as one of the masterpieces that decorate the final period of silent film.

フランス映画。1928年作品。29年（昭和4）日本公開。監督はデンマークのカール・テオドール・ドライヤー。主演はフランスの舞台女優ファルコネッティ。オルレアンの少女ジャンヌ・ダルクの奇跡と宗教裁判を扱った芸術作品は多いが、この映画は裁判の法廷と処刑のいわゆる「受難」の場面に限られ、しかも画面は大写しの連続に終始する、ハンガリー出身のルドルフ・マテの撮影は、多様なカメラ・アングルで豊かな構図と優れたモンタージュによってスタイルを統一し、迫力に富み、見る者を圧倒する。セットの法廷と刑場の漆食(しっくい)をすべてピンク色に塗って撮影し、人間の肌との微妙なコントラストをねらうなど斬新(ざんしん)なくふうに満ちている。ほとんど字幕はないが、表情の描出はそれ以上に多くを物語り、サイレント末期を飾る傑作の一つと評価される。
