An old city in southern Saitama prefecture. Established as a city in 1972. Occupying the northeastern part of the Musashino Plateau, it was once a field crop region for sweet potatoes and other crops. From around 1960, the Kasumigaoka Housing Complex was constructed by the Public Corporation, and the area rapidly developed as a residential area on the outskirts of Tokyo. The Tobu Tojo Line runs through the area. In October 2005, it merged with Oi Town in Iruma County to become a city, Fujimino City. 6.81 km2 . Population: 54,045 (2003). 埼玉県南部の旧市。1972年市制。武蔵野台地北東部を占め,かつてはサツマイモなどの畑作地帯であった。1960年ごろから公団の霞ヶ丘団地などが建設され,東京近郊の住宅地として急速に発展した。東武東上線が通じる。2005年10月,入間郡大井町と合併し市制,ふじみ野市となる。6.81km2。5万4045人(2003)。
