...Initially, the group's members included such influential Congress leaders as Lajpat Rai and MM Malaviya, and the group grew alongside the Congress. However, from the late 1920s, the group's religious sectarian character became stronger, and during the reign of Vinayak Damodar Savarkar (1883-1966), who served as president from 1937 to 1948, the group took on a different stance from the Congress, supporting the British war effort and expanding its influence during the imprisonment of the Congress leaders during the Quit India movement in 1942. It vehemently opposed the Pakistan plan (separation of Muslims) from the standpoint of Hindu communalism, but after India's independence, it was subject to government oppression along with the RSS, the ethnic militia to which the assassin of MK Gandhi belonged, for allegedly being involved in the assassination of Gandhi in January 1948.
