A culvert (ankyo) is a drainage channel that crosses a levee to take irrigation water from a river or to drain water from a drainage channel into a river. It is also called a culvert. There are irrigation culverts (irrigation culverts) and drainage culverts (drainage culverts). Gates are installed at culverts. The gates are normally open, but are closed during floods to prevent floodwaters from flowing into the irrigation channels and drainage channels. A pumping station may be installed to drain water from the drainage channel into the river when the drainage culvert gates are closed.
