Morris, who advocated Christian socialism, he wrote novels on social issues, such as East (1848) and Alton Locke, the Tailor-Poet (1850), which vividly depicted the lives of the poor in rural areas and London. However, after the decline of Chartism, he turned to fantasy novels such as Hypatia (1853), set in 5th century Alexandria, and Sail Away!
