A Turkic ethnic group whose main habitat is the Republic of Kazakhstan in Central Asia and the Yilihasake Autonomous Prefecture in the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region of the People's Republic of China. They are referred to as Kyrgyz or Kyrgyz-Kazakh in old Western documents because the Russians mistakenly called them Kyrgyz. The population is estimated at about 7.07 million in Kazakhstan (1992), 1.01 million in China (1988), and 10 million in Uzbekistan, Russia, Mongolia, etc. Originally nomadic, many now live a settled life.
