Water gate - Suimon (English spelling) barrier

Water gate - Suimon (English spelling) barrier

A structure built across a river to prevent floodwaters from flowing back into a tributary, or to prevent high tides and tsunamis from running up the river. There are backflow prevention gates installed in tributaries to prevent floodwaters from the main river from flowing back into the tributary, and flood gates installed near the river's mouth to prevent high tides and tsunamis from running up the river. Floodgates are equipped with gates. The gates of a floodgate are normally left open, and are fully closed in the event of flooding, a high tide, or a tsunami. A pumping station may be installed to drain tributary water into the main river and river water into the sea when the gates are fully closed. The Thames Barrier (completed in 1984) on the River Thames in the UK is a flood gate to protect London from high tides.

Iwabuchi Water Gate
This water gate is located at the junction of the main Arakawa River (foreground of the photo) and the tributary Sumida River. It was built in 1924 (Taisho 13) under the guidance of Sakano Yutaka, who worked on the construction of the Panama Canal. In 1982 (Showa 57), a new water gate was completed downstream and this water gate ceased its role, but it is still affectionately known as the "Red Water Gate." Kita-ku, Tokyo ©Yutaka Sakano ">
