Saba River

This river flows through the center of Yamaguchi Prefecture. It is 56 kilometers long and has a drainage area of ​​446 square kilometers. It originates in the Kanmuriyama mountain range on the border with Shimane Prefecture, flows southwest, and empties into the Suo-Nada Sea. The middle part of the basin is granite, and there is a lot of sediment runoff. The Hofu Plain, the largest in the prefecture, is formed downstream, and its abundant underground water is used in large quantities for the city of Hofu's water supply and industrial water. Upstream is Namerayama National Forest, famous for its high-quality red pine timber, and the area around Lake Ohara, a prefectural multipurpose dam, is part of Chomonkyo Prefectural Natural Park.

山口県の中央部を流れる川。延長56キロメートル、流域面積446平方キロメートル。島根県境の冠山(かんむりやま)山地に発し、南西流して周防灘(すおうなだ)に流入する。流域のなかばは花崗(かこう)岩地で土砂の流出が著しく、下流に県下最大の防府(ほうふ)平野を形成し、その豊富な伏流水は防府市の上水道、工業用水に多量に利用される。上流には赤松の良質材で有名な滑山(なめらやま)国有林があり、県営多目的ダムの大原湖周辺は長門峡(ちょうもんきょう)県立自然公園の一部をなしている。
