Manyo Thoughts - Man'yo-ko

An Edo period commentary on the Manyoshu written by Kamo no Mabuchi. 20 volumes. One of the "Five Ideas". Mabuchi used volumes 1, 2, 13, 11, 12, and 14 of the common edition of the Manyoshu as volumes 1 to 6, and these six volumes were the original form of the Manyoshu. The three volumes including the annotations and appendix for volumes 1 and 2 were published during Mabuchi's lifetime by 1769 (Meiwa 6). The annotations and appendix for volumes 3 to 6, as well as the Hitomaroshu, were added to complete the 10-volume Manyoshu in 1835 (Tenpo 6). Volumes 7 and after of the Manyoshu were supplemented by Koma no Moronari and others, and were handed down as copies, and were included in the Mabuchi Complete Works in the Meiji period. "Man'yoshu Ko" is a highly original commentary supported by a critical consciousness, and is of epoch-making significance in the history of Manyo studies.

江戸時代の『万葉集』注釈書。賀茂真淵(かもまぶち)の著。20巻。「五意(ごい)考」の一つ。真淵は通行本『万葉集』の巻1、巻2、巻13、巻11、巻12、巻14を順次に巻1から巻六にあて、この六巻を『万葉集』の原形としたが、巻1、巻2の注釈と別記をあわせた三巻は、真淵の生前、1769年（明和6）までに刊了した。巻三から巻六までの注釈と別記、『人麻呂(ひとまろ)集』を加えて、10巻10冊の『万葉考』が刊了をみたのは1835年（天保6）である。『万葉考』巻七以下は狛諸成(こまのもろなり)らが追補を加え、写本として伝わり、明治になって真淵全集に収められた。『万葉考』は批評意識に支えられ、独創性に富んだ注釈書として、万葉研究史上に画期的な意義をもつ。
