1870-1928 A geologist from the Meiji to early Showa periods.
Born on April 1, 1870. Professor at the Higher Normal School in 1908. Known for his research on diatomaceous earth and hot spring surveys, he edited the "Dai Nihon Chishi" (Great Japan Regional Geography) with Yamazaki Naomasa. Served as president of the Geological Society and the Geological Society. Died on August 26, 1928. Age 59. Born in Higo (Kumamoto Prefecture). Graduated from Imperial University. Written works include "Dai Mineralogy" (Great Mineralogy).

明治3年4月1日生まれ。31年高等師範教授。珪藻土(けいそうど)の研究,温泉調査などで知られ,山崎直方(なおまさ)と「大日本地誌」を編集した。地質学会,地学会の会長をつとめた。昭和3年8月26日死去。59歳。肥後(熊本県)出身。帝国大学卒。著作に「大鉱物学」など。
