A former town in Sakata County in northeastern Shiga Prefecture. It occupies the southern foot of Mt. Ibuki and the upper reaches of the Ane River, and agriculture, mainly rice, is practiced on the plains. The town of Suijō, in the centre of the town, flourished as a post town in the early modern period. There is a cement factory that uses limestone from Mt. Ibuki as its raw material. Mt. Ibuki is famous as a ski resort. In February 2005, it merged with San'in Town and Maibara Town in Sakata County to become Maibara City. 109.17 km2 . 6,034 people (2003). 滋賀県北東部,坂田郡の旧町。伊吹山の南麓と姉川の上流域を占め,平地では米作を主とする農業が行われる。中心の春照(すいじょう)は近世宿場町として栄えた。伊吹山の石灰岩を原料とするセメント工場がある。伊吹山はスキー場として有名。2005年2月坂田郡山東町,米原町と合併し市制,米原市となる。109.17km2。6034人(2003)。
