French joiner and trade union activist. Born in Avignon as the son of a joiner, he set out on a tour of France at the age of 18 to continue his training. During his four-and-a-half-year tour, which ended with exemplary results, he witnessed the conflicts and destruction of the various companionage organizations. He decided that it would be his life's work to reconcile these conflicts and create a cooperative organization, and in 1829 he traveled to Paris. Drawing on his highly intellectual skills, which he had acquired through self-study, he wrote songs and prepared pamphlets in an attempt to revive the companionage as a place for mutual assistance and technical education for craftsmen and to improve the conditions of workers and craftsmen.

フランスの指物師で組合運動家。アビニョンに指物職人の子として生まれ，みずからもその修業のために18歳半ばでフランス巡歴の旅に出た。模範的成果をもって終了した4年半の巡歴の間に，コンパニョナージュの諸組織が対立しあい，つぶしあうのを見た彼は，それらの対立を和解させ，協調した組織をつくることを一生の課題と決め，1829年パリにのぼる。職人の相互扶助と技術教育の場としてのコンパニョナージュを再興し，労働者･職人の状態改善をはかろうと，彼は独学で身につけた高い知性をもとに，みずから歌をつくり，パンフレットを作成した。
