American poet, critic, and painter. Born in Indiana, he lived in San Francisco for many years and was a pioneer of the Beat movement (Beat Generation). He had a deep interest in Eastern culture and visited Japan several times. His translations include "100 Classical Japanese Poems" (1954), a book of tanka and haiku, and excellent English translations of classical Chinese poetry, such as those of the Song Dynasty female poet Li Qingzhao. He also translated works by Japanese female poets such as Yosano Akiko and Shiraishi Kazuko. His poetry collections include "The Phoenix and the Turtle" (1944) and "New Poetry Collection" (1974).

アメリカの詩人，評論家，画家。インディアナ州生れ。サンフランシスコに長く住み，ビート運動(ビート･ジェネレーション)の育ての親であった。東洋文化に関心が深く，数回来日したこともある。短歌と俳句の訳書《日本の古典詩100編》(1954)および中国の古典詩，たとえば宋代の女流詩人李清照のすぐれた英訳がある。与謝野晶子，白石かず子など，日本の女流詩人の英訳も手がけている。詩集には，《不死鳥と亀》(1944)，《新詩集》(1974)などがある。
