A Confucian scholar in the mid-Edo period. Commonly known as Gorozaemon, he had no title. He was born in Fukuyama, Bingo Province (Hiroshima Prefecture). At the age of 22, he went to Kyoto and studied under Yamazaki Ansai. He was known as one of the three great masters of the Kimono school along with Miyake Shosai and Asami Keisai. Later, he opposed his teacher Ansai's theory of respect for the inner and the outer world and Suika Shinto, and was excommunicated for defending the position of Zhu Xi school. He first served the lord of Fukuyama (Mizuno clan), and in 1694 (Genroku 7) he became the teacher of the lord of Umayabashi (now Maebashi) (Sakai clan), and participated in the education and administration of the domain for over 20 years. In his later years, he served the lord of Hikone (Ii clan). He was a man of lofty and eloquent character, with a sharp gaze and a gift for words, and was said to be eloquent and brimming with metaphors. He passed away on August 15, 4th year of the Kyoho era. He was 70 years old. His published writings include one volume of "Preface to the Envoy of Benjinsai to the Sacrifice of the Dead" in the "Japanese Confucian Scholars' Series" and one volume of "Considerations on the Inside and Outside of Respect for Righteousness," and his collected works include 16 volumes of "Unzoroku," 30 volumes of "Unzoroku Shui," and 6 volumes of "Zokuzoroku Shui," all of which have been collected in the "Complete Works of Sato Naokata" (1931), edited by the Japanese Classical Society. 江戸中期の儒者。通称五郎左衛門、号はない。備後(びんご)国(広島県)福山に生まれる。22歳のとき京都に上り、山崎闇斎(やまざきあんさい)に従学、三宅尚斎(みやけしょうさい)、浅見絅斎(あさみけいさい)とともに崎門(きもん)の三傑(さんけつ)と称された。のち師闇斎の敬内義外説や垂加神道(すいかしんとう)説に反対して、朱子学の立場を守り破門された。初め福山侯(水野氏)に仕え、1694年(元禄7)厩橋(うまやばし)(現、前橋)侯(酒井氏)の師となり、20余年同藩の学政に参画、晩年は彦根侯(井伊氏)に仕える。その人となりは高邁逸宕(こうまいいっとう)、眼彩は人を射、また口才があり、雄弁懸河、譬喩(ひゆ)湧(わ)くがごとくであったという。享保(きょうほう)4年8月15日没。年70歳。 刊行された著述は『日本儒林叢書(そうしょ)』に『辨仁斎送浮屠道香序(べんじんさいふとどうこうにおくるのじょ)』1巻、『敬義内外考論』1巻があり、著作集に『韞蔵(うんぞう)録』16冊、『韞蔵録拾遺』30冊、『続韞蔵録拾遺』6冊があり、これらはいずれも日本古典学会編『佐藤直方全集』(1931)に収録されている。 [平 重道 2016年5月19日] 『平重道著『崎門学における敬義内外の論争』(『近世日本思想史研究』所収・1969・吉川弘文館)』 [参照項目] | | | | |出典 小学館 日本大百科全書(ニッポニカ)日本大百科全書(ニッポニカ)について 情報 | 凡例 |
