It is one of the four main temples of the Yellow Hat (Gelug) sect of Tibetan Buddhism. It is located in the southeastern part of Tibet, in the foothills, 3 km north of the capital, Lhasa. The official name of the temple is Theg Chen Ling (Mahayana) Monastery. It was built in 1417 by Jamtsen Choeje, a disciple of Tsongkhapa, the founder of the Yellow Hat sect. It is one of the largest temples for learning in Tibet, with three faculties, two for exoteric Buddhism (generally Mahayana Buddhism) and one for esoteric Buddhism, and once housed over 5,000 scholars. As it assisted the Potala Palace, the palace of the Dalai Lama in Lhasa, and had a strong character as an official temple, the temple grounds were destroyed in March 1951 due to oppression by the Chinese military and officials and a rebellion against them, and many of the monks fled to India with the Dalai Lama.
