Diphosphorus pentaoxide (diphosphorus pentoxide)

Diphosphorus pentaoxide (diphosphorus pentoxide)
Common names are phosphorus pentoxide and phosphoric anhydride. Chemical formula P2O5 or P4O10 . It is obtained by burning phosphorus in air or oxygen. There are three forms depending on the crystallization method. The first crystallization obtained by burning phosphorus is the hexagonal crystal system, which can be purified by sublimation at 1 atm and 360 °C. At higher temperatures, the orthorhombic or tetragonal crystal systems are formed. It is a white powder. It is highly hygroscopic. It dissolves in water to form metaphosphoric acid HPO3 , and in hot water to form orthophosphoric acid H3PO4 . In the hexagonal crystal system and gas, the phosphorus atoms are at the vertices of a regular tetrahedron, six oxygen atoms are located on each edge, and the remaining four oxygen atoms are located above the phosphorus on the axis of the regular tetrahedron.
