The modern cocktail was created and popularized in the United States, and there are many stories about its name, which is a twist on the word "cocktail," meaning rooster's tail, but all of them are merely myths. Cocktails became popular in London and Paris in the 1920s, and in England the custom of drinking cocktails instead of afternoon tea developed, and cocktail parties eventually became established as a social occasion.
