Chigo lily - Chigo lily

A perennial plant of the lily family (APG classification: Melastomataceae). The stem grows to a height of 30-40 cm in April-May, and 3-4 months later, 1-4 rhizomes emerge. The rhizomes are 10-20 cm long and run horizontally underground. The mother plant dies around September, but the daughter plants formed at the tips of the rhizomes separate and survive. There are sexual individuals that bear fruit and asexual individuals that do not. Sexual individuals have 5-12 leaves, while asexual individuals have 2-7 leaves, elliptical or oblong, and hairless on both sides. In May-June, one or two broad-bell flowers with a peduncle of 1-2 cm are produced at the top of the stem, pointing slightly downward. The tepals are white and lanceolate, with a slight spur-like swelling at the bottom. The fruit is a black, spherical berry about 1 cm in diameter. It grows on the forest floor of deciduous forests from Hokkaido to Kyushu, and is also found in coniferous forests in the upper part of low mountains. It is also found in the southern Kuril Islands, the Korean Peninsula, and China.

ユリ科（APG分類：イヌサフラン科）の多年草。茎は4～5月に高さ30～40センチメートルに伸び、3～4か月後に1～4本の地下茎を出す。地下茎は長さ10～20センチメートルで、地下を横走する。9月ころ母株は枯死するが、地下茎の先端部に形成された娘個体が分離し、生き残る。果実をつける有性個体と、果実をつけない無性個体がある。葉は有性個体では5～12枚、無性個体では2～7枚、楕円(だえん)形または長楕円形で、両面とも毛はない。5～6月、茎頂に花柄1～2センチの広鐘花を1、2個やや下向きにつける。花被片(かひへん)は白色、披針(ひしん)形で下部がわずかに距(きょ)状に膨らむ。果実は黒色、球形の液果で、径約1センチメートル。北海道から九州の落葉樹林の林床に生え、低山帯上部の針葉樹林内にもみられる。南千島から朝鮮半島、中国にも分布する。
