Sounosuke Sato - Sounosuke Sato

Japanese: 佐藤惣之助 - さとうそうのすけ
Sounosuke Sato - Sounosuke Sato

Poet. Born in Kanagawa Prefecture. Studied at the French department attached to Gyosei Junior High School. He started writing haiku early on and studied under Sato Koroku. He became acquainted with Senge Motomaro and others, and moved from the humanism of "Shirakaba" to a more vital and sensuous style of poetry, and in his later years he wrote poems in tune with the war and the times. He published 22 volumes of poetry, from "Seigi no Kabuto" (1916) to "Watatsumi no Uta" (1941), and produced many new poets through his "Shinoie" (Poetry House, first published in July 1925). He loved fishing and traveling, which he reflected in his essays and poetry. In his later years, he tried his hand at writing lyrics for folk songs and popular songs, and his well-known works include "Akagi no Komoriuta" (Lullaby of Akagi) and "Jinsei Gekijo" (Theater of Life).
