Nasser

Japanese: ナーセル
Nasser
Egyptian soldier and politician. He participated in the nationalist movement at a young age. In 1952, he led the Free Officers in the successful Egyptian Revolution, abolished the monarchy, and established the republic in 1953. In 1954, he ousted Naguib and became prime minister, and served as president from 1956 to 1970. While serving as a standard-bearer for the non-aligned countries, he nationalized foreign capital and promoted modernization through land reform and other measures. In particular, he nationalized the Suez Canal in a dispute over funds for the construction of the Aswan High Dam, and won a political victory in the subsequent Second Arab-Israeli War (Suez Crisis). As a leader of Arab nationalism, he exercised leadership over Arab countries, but his international position weakened due to the failure of the union with Syria in 1961 and the defeat in the Third Arab-Israeli War in 1967. → Conference of Non-Aligned Countries → Related topics United Arab Republic | Egypt | Sayyid Qutb | Sadat | Naguib | Palestinian issue
