Born: April 15, 1710, Brussels [Died] April 20, 1770. French ballerina. Her real name was Marie-Anne de Cupis de Camargo. Born to an Italian father and a Spanish mother. After studying under F. Prévost in Paris, she made her debut at the Opera in 1726 with "Les characters de danse". She danced in "Ajas", "The Disguised Lovers", "The Judgement of Paris", "The Grace of the Indies", and other pieces. She was a rival of M. Salé, who rejected the old customs of ballet, and Camargo also shortened the hem of her skirt and took off the heels of her dancing shoes. This gave her legs more freedom, allowing her to take quick steps in the air, and she invented the entrechat quatre (four entrechats) and jeté. She was famous for her ability to perform large steps in the air, which had previously been reserved for men. She was not particularly blessed with good looks, but it is said that she did not look that way on stage. She became a French citizen in 1732 and retired in 1751. Later, in 1930, the Camargo Society was founded in London to provide financial support for the ballet.
