He joined the navy at the age of 14, and served at naval bases in the West Indies and the Mediterranean, where he achieved the rank of captain with distinction. He later used his experiences to write maritime novels full of humor and abundant anecdotes, such as The Naval Officer: or Scenes and Adventures in the Life of Frank Mildmay (1829) and Mr. Midshipman Easy (36). He also wrote adventure novels for children, such as Masterman Ready (41) and The Children of the New Forest (47).
