Japanese: ワモンチョウ(輪紋蝶) - ワモンチョウ

A general term for insects belonging to the family Amathusiidae of the order Lepidoptera, or a single species of the family. This name comes from the fact that many species in this family have eye-like patterns on the underside of their wings. They flourish in the tropics of India and Australia, and about 100 species are known. They are considered to be most similar to the South American family Morphoidae in terms of lineage. Small ones have a span of about 6 cm, while large ones can reach 17 cm. Some, such as Zeuxidia , have a bluish-purple glow reminiscent of Morpho butterflies, some, such as Taenaris , have a single large eye-like pattern on the surface of the hind wings, and some, such as Stichophthalma , have a long row of eye-like patterns on the underside of their wings.

鱗翅目ワモンチョウ科Amathusiidaeに属する昆虫の総称，またはそのうちの1種を指す。この仲間には裏面に眼状紋をもった種類が多いのでこの名がある。インド，オーストラリア地域の熱帯に栄えており，約100種が知られている。系統的には南アメリカのモルフォチョウ科にもっとも近いとされている。小さいものでは開張6cm前後，大型のものでは17cmにも達する。なかには，ルリツヤワモンチョウ属Zeuxidiaのようにモルフォチョウを思わせるような青紫色の輝きをもつもの，メダマチョウ属Taenarisのように後羽の表面に1個の大きな眼状紋を現すもの，ワモンチョウ属Stichophthalmaのように裏面に眼状紋の長い列が現れるものなどがある。
