It is dangerous to summarize the trends in music over a dozen centuries into a few characteristics, as there is a danger of forgetting the differences between eras, but I will attempt this with the limitation that it will only provide a rough guide. The spirit of French music is not heavy and emotional, or abstract and speculative, like northern music, centered on German and Austrian music, nor does it give special priority to the expression of sensibility and emotion, like southern music, represented by Italian music.
