...A species of the Gharialinae subfamily of the Crocodylidae family with the longest, slender snout of any crocodile (illustration). Also known as the Ganges crocodile. It is found in the Indus, Ganges, Mahanadi, and Brahmaputra rivers from northern India and western Pakistan to the Assam region, and has also been recorded from the Irrawaddy River in Myanmar. It is large, measuring 3.5 to 4.5 meters in total length, with a maximum of 6.25 meters. The left and right maxillae are elongated and touch each other, so the front jawbone at the end is separated from the nasal bone. This characteristic distinguishes it from other crocodilians, and sometimes the Gharialidae family is formed by itself, but comparisons with fossil species have led to it being treated as a subfamily of the Crocodylidae family. ...
