A village in Minamiamabe County, southeastern Oita Prefecture. Population 2,220 (1995). Most of the village area is forest, with cultivated land limited to the Banjo River basin, which flows east through the center. Agriculture and forestry are the main industries, and the village produces tea, timber, shiitake mushrooms, and is also thriving with the medicinal herb Coptis japonica. The Onagara Cave, a natural monument, is located here. National Route 326 runs through the western edge of the village. 大分県南東部,南海部(みなみあまべ)郡の村。人口2220(1995)。村域の大部分が山林で耕地は中央部を東流する番匠川流域に限られる。農林業が主で,茶,木材,シイタケを産するほか,薬草のオウレンの栽培が盛んである。天然記念物の小半(おながら)鍾乳洞がある。村の西端を国道326号線が通じる。【萩原 毅】
