Japanese: 差動装置 - さどうそうち

Also called differential or diff. A device that takes the difference or sum of the motions of two or more mechanical parts to move one part. A typical example is a differential gear device that is attached to the axle of an automobile and transmits the driving force from the propeller shaft to both wheels. This is a mechanism that performs final reduction in the rotation of the propeller shaft, and rotates the outer wheels faster than the inner wheels when the course is curved.

ディファレンシャルあるいはデフとも。２種以上の機械部品のそれぞれの運動の差または和を取り出して一つの部分を動かす装置。自動車の車軸に取りつけて，推進軸からの駆動力を両車輪に伝える差動歯車装置（ディファレンシャルギヤ）が代表的。これは推進軸の回転の終減速を行い，進路が曲線となるとき外側車輪を内側車輪より速く回転させる機構になっている。
