Otsuki Fukuken

...Japanese linguist. His real name was Seifuku, and he was commonly known as Fukkusaburo and Fukken. He was the son of the Confucian scholar Iwakei and the younger brother of Joden. Born in Edo, he studied Chinese classics and Western studies at a young age, and later studied the Japanese language. He received his doctorate in literature in 1899 and became a member of the Imperial Academy in 1911. His achievements were notable for his efforts in compiling dictionaries, writing grammar books, and addressing the issue of Japanese characters. Genkai (1889-91) was initially completed after ten years of work ordered by the Ministry of Education, but it became a groundbreaking Japanese dictionary and went through several hundred editions in later years. He devoted himself to revising it for the last ten years of his life, and Daigenkai was not completed until his death (1937).
