A city in the south-central part of Saskatchewan, Canada. Population 196,811 (2001). 240 km northwest of Regina, facing the South Saskatchewan River, it is located almost in the center of the inhabited part of the province. It is a railway junction station on the Canadian Pacific Railway and the Canadian National Railway. It is the center of the spring wheat belt, with a vast hinterland, and is an important distribution center for grains and livestock products. Flour milling, food, leather manufacturing, and chemical industries are also thriving. There are also large-scale factories for refining oils, cement, and potash salts. It was founded in 1883 as the capital of prohibitionists. It was incorporated as a city in 1906. It is home to the University of Saskatchewan, which opened in 1907, and the Carnegie Library, and is also the educational and cultural center of the province. The city's name comes from the Indian name for the red wild strawberry that grows in this region.
