Roman politician and historian from 95 to 175. Born in Nicomedia in Bithynia, he served as governor of Cappadocia during the reign of Emperor Hadrian. He spent the rest of his life in seclusion as a private citizen, devoted to writing. As a student of the Stoic Epictetus, he wrote down his teacher's sayings, "Discourses." His attitude of avoiding intellectual delusion can be seen as a sign of his outstanding talent in historical writing. His works include "India" and "The Campaign of Alexander."
