Entelecheia (English spelling)

Japanese: エンテレケイア(英語表記)entelecheia
Entelecheia (English spelling)
An Aristotelian term meaning in a final state. According to him, becoming is the actualization of form, which is the end (telos) of matter in a potential state, and this actualized state or form itself is entelecheia. In other words, it is perfect actuality, which can also be translated as actualization. It is synonymous with energeia, which expresses actuality, but the latter emphasizes the active aspect. This concept was inherited by scholastic philosophy, and in the early modern period Leibniz used it as a synonym for monad, emphasizing the meaning of actualization. An extension of this is Driesch's vitalism, in which entelecheia is asserted to be the life principle of living organisms that transcends causality.
