Timbales (English spelling)
A percussion instrument used in Cuban music. It is a drum about 35-40cm in diameter, with leather (cowhide or plastic) stretched only on the upper side of a shallow metal (originally copper, but now mostly steel) body, and consists of two slightly different sized drums arranged horizontally on a stand. Struck with a rod-shaped stick, it produces a flashy sound that is suitable for decorative phrases, and has been widely used in jazz, fusion, reggae, and other genres in recent years.
