Tokigawa [village] - Tokigawa

Japanese: 都幾川[村] - ときがわ

A village in Hiki County, central Saitama Prefecture. Population 8,637 (1995). Located on the eastern edge of the Chichibu Mountains, it occupies the upper reaches of the Toki River, a tributary of the Arakawa River. Most of the village area is covered by forests, and forestry is thriving. Building materials manufacturing is also thriving, and has been a major local industry from the Edo period to the present, with products being shipped nationwide. Tea is grown in the terraced fields between the mountains, and mandarin oranges are cultivated on the southwestern slope of Mount Yumitate. Jikoji Temple, an ancient Tendai sect temple, has many cultural assets, including the National Treasure "Lotus Sutra Ipponkyo" and the Important Cultural Property Founder's Tower.

埼玉県中央部，比企郡の村。人口8637(1995)。秩父山地東縁に位置し，荒川の支流都幾川の上流域を占める。村域の大半が山林で，林業が盛ん。建具製造業も盛んで，江戸時代から現在まで有力な地場産業となっており，全国に出荷されている。山間の段々畑では茶がつくられ，弓立山の南西斜面ではミカンが栽培されている。天台宗の古刹（こさつ）慈光寺には国宝の《法華経一品経》のほか，重要文化財の開山塔など文化財が多い。
