…It started with a style that combined Gothic structures with Renaissance decorative motifs (medales, busts, coats of arms, grotesques, etc.), called Plateresque because the work resembled silverwork platería (plateresque style). The main work is the main entrance of the University of Salamanca, but over time, the fusion of structure and decoration progressed, as in the façade of the University of Alcalá de Henares, and reached a purely Italian style in the Palace of Carlos V, designed by the painter Pedro Machuca (?-1550) in the Alhambra, and a strict style in the monastery of El Escorial, where Philip II devoted himself and Herrera realized his ideals (Herrera style). This great monument of early modern Spain combined a summer palace, a monastery, a church, and a royal mausoleum, making it a fitting building for the headquarters of the Counter-Reformation. …
