Jean Ingelow

English female poet and novelist. Born in Boston, Lincolnshire. At the age of 30, she published anonymously A Record of Incidents and Feelings in Verse (1850), which was recognized by Tennyson. Her Anthology of Poems (1863) became a huge hit, with some of her poems composed and widely sung. She turned to novels for a time, and also wrote children's books, such as Stories for the Young (1865). Her several volumes of poetry were compiled into a single volume in 1898. Although her pretentious writing style was a flaw, she did produce some excellent works, such as High Tide on the Lincolnshire Coast (1863).

イギリスの女流詩人，小説家。リンカンシャーのボストン生れ。30歳で匿名出版した《詩で綴る事件と感情の記録》(1850)がテニソンに認められ，《詩集》(1863)は爆発的人気を博し，作品のいくつかは作曲され広く歌われた。一時期小説に転向，また《子どものための物語》(1865)など児童読物も書いた。数巻の詩集は1898年一巻本となる。気取った文体が欠点だが，〈リンカンシャー沿岸の高潮〉(1863)など逸品がある。
