Suspenders - suspender

Suspenders - suspender

A pair of strings hung from the shoulders to prevent trousers or skirts from slipping down. They are also called trouser suspenders or skirt suspenders. In England, they refer to sock fasteners, and trouser suspenders are called braces. They seem to have started to be used to hold up pantaloons around the end of the 18th century. Early ones were made of leather and fastened to the trousers with buttons, but later they were made of elastic material and fastened with clips. When everyday suits no longer consisted of a three-piece suit but instead consisted of a top and bottom without a vest, waist belts became widespread and suspenders were rarely used for men's clothing other than formal attire, ski wear, and children's clothing.

In recent years, with the rise of non-traditional, gender-neutral clothing such as punk fashion, baggy trousers have become popular among young men and women, and suspenders have made a comeback and are popular as an accessory along with other gentleman's accessories such as ties and pocket squares.
