Pilot whale (large-headed whale) - Pilot whale
A general term for mammals belonging to the Globicephala genus of the Delphinidae family in the suborder Toothed Whales. There are two extant species. In Japan, species that have traditionally been called ma-pilot whales, naisagoto, shiogoto, tappanaga, etc., are all short-finned pilot whales ( G. macrorhynchus ) (illustration). They are named after their large, drum-like heads. They are widely distributed in temperate and tropical seas around the world, but local types are known in various regions.
