1869‐1940 French actor, director, and theater company leader. He had been involved with A. Antoine's Théâtre Libre since his student days, but after graduating from the Conservatoire (National Dramatic School), he joined the Théâtre des Beaux-Arts, founded by the symbolist poet Paul Fort (1872-1960). In 1893, he directed M. Maeterlinck's Pelléas et Mélisande for the first time, and renamed the Théâtre des Beaux-Arts to the Théâtre d'Etudes Productions, taking over as its director. He directed works by H. Ibsen, B. Björnson, A. Strindberg, G. Hauptmann, and G. D'Annunzio, among others, but his name is remembered in theater history for the premiere of A. Jarry's Rei Ubu in 1896, which is considered the prototype of later avant-garde theater. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
