The capital of Grenada. It is located on the southwest coast of the island of Grenada in the West Indies. Population: 4,621 (1991). Founded by the French in 1705, it was called Fort Royal. It is a beautiful city that combines the atmosphere of 18th-century French countryside with the British Georgian style, and was the capital of the British Windward Islands from 1885 to 1958. The port has deep water and is prosperous due to fishing and the export of tropical products. Grand Anse Beach in the southwest is known as a tourist destination and is lined with hotels.
