Etsujin

Japanese: 越人 - えつじん
Etsujin

A haiku poet of the Shomon school in the early Edo period. His family name was Ochi. He was commonly known as Juzo. His other names were Fuzanshi and Kinkao. He was from Hokuetsu. He moved to Nagoya early and ran a dyeing shop. He may have been Basho's student in 1684 (Jokyo 1). His first Etsujin haiku appeared in "Haru no Hi" published in 1686. In November 1687, he visited Tokoku with Basho, who had been convicted and was retiring to Homi Village in Mikawa. In August of the following year, he followed Basho on his journey for "Sarashina Kikou" (Travels in Sarashina), and traveled to Edo, where he became acquainted with the Shomon school. After that, he gradually became estranged from Basho along with Kakei, Nomizu and others. From around 1700 (Genroku 13), he stayed away from the haiku world for a dozen years. In 1715 (Shotoku 5), he returned with the publication of Saitancho. He criticized Shiko in works such as Fumyoja, sparking controversy. His view of haiku was one that respected the early style of Sho. He is buried at Choenji Temple in Nagoya. He edited and wrote works such as Shakubikan, Mitsunokaho, and Niwakamadoshu.
