In ancient Rome, contractors for construction and land cultivation. From the 2nd century onwards, the term came to refer not only to private contractors but also to contractors for mines, granaries and livestock in the empire. They either carried out the work themselves or acted as intermediaries, employing labourers. From the 2nd century onwards, the term also referred to those who collected local customs duties, tolls and other taxes on behalf of the tax collectors publicani.
